Château Angélus is one of the most renowned estates in Saint-Émilion, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé “A” and known for its expressive and elegant style. The 2021 vintage highlights the estate’s precision and balance, with Merlot supported by Cabernet Franc grown on the limestone and clay soils of the right bank. This vintage leans toward freshness and finesse, offering a refined interpretation of Angélus that combines depth, aromatic complexity, and graceful structure.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour with purple reflections. The nose reveals aromas of ripe blackberry, black cherry, and plum, layered with floral violet notes, subtle cocoa, and hints of spice. On the palate, the wine is silky and well structured, with fine tannins and lively freshness. Flavours of dark berries, cassis, and graphite unfold gradually, leading to a long and elegant finish with delicate notes of spice and cedar.
Food Pairing
Pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled beef, duck breast, or slow cooked game dishes. It also complements earthy flavours such as wild mushrooms, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses. Decanting is recommended to allow the wine to open and reveal its full aromatic complexity.
Vintage Report 2021
The 2021 vintage in Saint-Émilion produced wines that emphasize freshness, elegance, and classical balance. The growing season brought challenges, including spring frost and a relatively cool summer, but a favorable September allowed the grapes to ripen steadily. Merlot, the dominant grape in Saint Émilion, performed well on the region’s limestone and clay soils. The wines typically show vibrant red and dark fruit, floral aromatics, and refined tannins, supported by bright acidity. Overall, 2021 Saint Émilion wines are graceful and well balanced, with purity of fruit and polished structure. They are approachable earlier than the richer recent vintages, yet still capable of developing beautifully with time in the cellar.
